Urban Oasis

Buenos Aires is a pleasantly green city and the National Park and Ecological Reserve near Puerto Madero, is one of our favourite places here. Puerto Madero, the old port of Buenos Aires, has been renovated and is lined with trendy restaurants, coffee shops and off course, a McDonald's. It looks so new compared to the rest of the city and is a bit touristy but it is worth a fifteen minute walk along the pier. You have to walk past the port to get to the nature reserve, which is a combination of marshland and forest, and is a great place to see native plants, small animals and bird-watch. What makes the reserve unique is that it is in the heart of the city. With a packed lunch, we headed to there to spend the afternoon walking, and taking photographs.

Sometimes when you are set on animal watching, you end up seeing nothing. Thankfully we weren't disappointed at this park. The loud chirping of birds greeted us as entered the park and it wasn't long before you start to see them. Along the way there are look-out points where you can see the city skyline from across the tall grasses of the marsh. The reserve also follows the coastline so you can sit and watch the waves crash on the beach and small sailboats go by. We followed the dirt trail winding through the reserve, had lunch by the beach and saw a lot of birds. We were lucky enough to get some nice photos of the black and white cardinal with a vibrant red head and a beautiful parrot-green bird, called a Nanday. It was nice to spend time in a peaceful and quiet place in all the loud chaos of Buenos Aires.
