The White City

After four days of trekking, we were tired and wanted to spend some time just relaxing. Lucky for us, we had arrived in Arequipa and it was just the place to do that. Unlike Cusco and Lima, Arequipa is a quiet city, big but quiet. We arrived on a Sunday morning so the whole city seemed abandoned. There were almost no cars or people on the roads. This meant we were able to have a nice walk around the city and spend time in the main plaza without the sound of cars honking. Yes, honking cars is a issue in South America and you won't understand this until you spend a afternoon bombarded by car horns. There are lots of tours that we could have done- hikes to the Colca Canyon, mountain biking, sand boarding and many more. However, we chose to just spend a couple of days drinking beer from the restaurants overlooking the plazas and enjoying the architecture of the White City.

On the second day in Arequipa, we visited the Santa Catalina Monastery for nuns. This was where the elite sent their children to be educated and or become nuns of the Dominican Second Order. The monastery itself is quite large, covering several blocks and was beautiful to walk through. The sections we visited are open to the public but Santa Catalina is still an active monastery.
