Feeling like Feijoada

It's raining in Rio today, one of those days when it will rain all day, and the day's dreariness makes you want to eat something steaming and hot. Just one of those days when are too lazy to cook but want comfort food and a steaming pot of feijoada right now would hit the spot! So far, in my experience with Brazilian cuisine, feijoada is weekend comfort food. It's a meal to be had with your family, a really hearty, filling meal over good conversation. We were in Sao Paulo a few weeks ago on the weekend, and stopped at a restaurant serving feijoada completo. Looking at the tables around us, we figured we should just share one order. Feijoada is slowed cooked in a clay pot (which my mother-in-law says makes everything taste better :-) ) and arrived pipping hot to our table very quickly. Although its origins are Portuguese, for Brazilians it's their national dish-a stew of seasoned black beans, salted pork and beef, slowly cooked to perfection and served with collards, and rice. Sometimes it's accompanied with slices of orange, farofa, which is toasted manioc flour and small bits of crispy, fried, pork. It definitely hit the spot that Saturday, and I wish I were having some right now!
